Course Structure

The MTeach (ECE) is delivered over four semesters of full-time study and consists of 16 units totalling 192 credit points. Students complete 15 core units and one elective unit. Each unit is worth 12 credit points.

Professional experience is embedded across the course through supervised placement components completed within designated units. Students complete a total of 70 days of professional experience during the course.

The first year of the MTeach (ECE) aligns with the Graduate Diploma of Early Childhood Education (GDECE). Eligible students may complete the GDECE as an exit qualification or continue into the second year of the Masters course.

Professional Experience

The MTeach (ECE) includes embedded professional experience placements completed within designated units across the course.

Students complete a total of 70 days of supervised professional experience, including:

  • Birth to 2 years placements
  • 3 to 5 years placements
  • Ready to Teach placements
  • and Research in Practice placements

Professional experience placements are completed within the following units:

  • EDE401 Curriculum Design and Assessment in Early Childhood Education;
  • EDE405 Ethics, Professional Identity and Leadership in Early Childhood Education;
  • and EDE508 Research Project B: Preferential Specialised Project.

Students are required to obtain a valid Working with Children Check and National Police Check prior to commencing professional experience placements. Failure to obtain the required checks may affect a student’s ability to undertake professional experience and progress in the course.

Career Opportunities, Accreditation and Teacher Registration

The MTeach (ECE) is approved by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) as an early childhood teaching qualification for working with children from birth to five years of age.

Graduates of the MTeach (ECE) may seek employment opportunities across a range of early childhood education settings, including:

  • Early childhood education and care services;
  • Kindergartens;
  • Preschools;
  • Other early childhood education settings working with children from birth to five years of age.

 

The course is not designed for teacher registration or employment in primary or secondary school settings.

Completion of the MTeach (ECE) may be used to support an application for early childhood teacher registration where this is required. Registration and employment requirements are determined independently by the relevant teacher regulatory authority and may include additional requirements such as English language proficiency and suitability assessments.

Students intending to work in Victoria should refer to the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) for information regarding registration requirements for early childhood teachers. Students intending to work in other Australian states or territories should refer to the relevant teacher regulatory authority and ACECQA for current registration and employment requirements.
